![]() We arrived at 2:00 am after driving for five hours and slept in our car for the night (romantic, right!?). Our first stop along the drive was at the Painted Hills. If not, camping in hazardous air quality would be impossible. We left late Thursday night, crossing our fingers that we could outrun the smoke from western Oregon’s fires. The ten-hour drive there and raging wildfires throughout the Pacific Northwest made it a bit of a gamble, though. That’s why during the height of the pandemic, Zach and I knew dry camping there would make for the perfect way to celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary. It’s like the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, but without the crowds. It’s 12 miles of beautiful desert and hot springs overlooked by the Steen Mountains in remote, southeastern Oregon. Its one of the more unique places for camping in Utah.The Alvord Desert might just be Oregon’s best-kept secret. This is a great place to camp if you want to see some wildlife–the bison and coyotes are common sights on the island. Antelope Island State Park is located in the middle of the Great Salt Lake and it offers some incredible scenery. ![]() This Salt Lake campground is a little further from the city, but it’s definitely worth the drive. In the summer the wildflowers are unbelievable here! Antelope Island State Park, Great Salt Lake, Willard There’s also a great little lake for swimming and fishing. ![]() It’s STUNNING! It’s located just 15 minutes from the city and it has amazing views of the valley and the mountains. This is one of the most popular places for camping in Utah and it’s super close to Salt Lake City. Below, you’ll find our favorite campgrounds that are within an hour of Salt Lake City. ![]() ![]() While some of these are just minutes out of the city, the campgrounds that are a little farther away often offer more solitude and less crowds. All of these Salt Lake campgrounds can be reached within an hour of the city. Salt Lake City is tucked right against the mountains and it has some incredible camping close by. ![]()
